How to Use Organic Sourdough Starter
Our organic sourdough starter from Marley's Monsters is a versatile addition to your baking repertoire. Whether you're new to sourdough or a seasoned baker, here’s how to activate and maintain your dried sourdough starter for delicious, homemade bread.
Step-by-Step
Activating Your Dried Sourdough Starter
Day 1: Start in a pinch bowl by soaking 1 ½ teaspoons of dried starter in 1 tablespoon of lukewarm purified or spring water for a few minutes to soften. Stir in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose or bread flour. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours.
Day 2: To the mixture, add 1 tablespoon of flour and 2 teaspoons of water. Stir well, cover, and let sit for another 24 hours.
Day 3: Stir in 1 tablespoon of flour and 1 teaspoon of water. Within the next 12 to 24 hours, you should start to see bubbling action, indicating fermentation is active. Warmer temperatures expedite this process.
Transfer: Once bubbly and active, transfer the activated starter to a jar with ample room for expansion. Stir in 1/3 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of water. Mark the level on the jar with a rubber band. Within about 12 hours, your starter should be lively and spongy.
Daily Feedings: Continue to build your starter with once or twice daily feedings. Double or triple the quantity with each feeding to increase volume. Maintain a consistent starter consistency by using equal weights of flour and water.
Now comes the fun part!
Using Your Sourdough Starter
Once your sourdough starter is active, you can use it to bake delicious breads, pancakes, waffles, and more. Remember to reserve a small amount of starter after each use and replenish it with equal parts flour and water to keep it alive and thriving.
